Professor Tony Travers, The Greater London Group, LSE

Decentralisation of power from central and regional governments to local authorities is an important policy for both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. In February 2009 the Conservatives launched a major policy green paper outlining plans to give power back to local communities. Some of the proposed policies include: abolishing all regional planning and housing powers exercised by regional government; providing citizens in large cities with an opportunity to choose whether to have an elected mayor; and allowing citizens to veto high council tax rises. Many of these policies will guide the Coalition Government as it seeks to rebalance the relationship between central and local governments. Prof Travers will discuss the proposed reforms and assess their impact on local government.
