The purpose of the symposium is to provide a forum for discussing several of the new therapies which became available in the medical world during the course of the eighteenth century. How did these new therapies relate to the rapid expansion in the "medical marketplace" at a time of increasing commercialisation of goods and services in general, particularly in urban contexts and in transactions in other parts of the world? The commodification of electricity, magnetism, airs, waters, and the non-naturals in general was evident in the activities of individual practitioners, and the public importance of such new therapies is demonstrated by the willingness of rulers and administrators to invest in these new therapies and to found institutions which housed them.
Please note: The symposium will be recorded. Please ensure that you are seated by 10.40am.
