The Hidden World of Past Oceans

Open to: Academic | Alumni | Public | Student

Microscopic remains of minute marine plankton are present in their billions in the rocks beneath our feet. The small size and fragility of these objects often results in imperfect fossil records, but, very rarely, we find rocks containing unaltered remains that provide windows onto long-extinct ocean ecosystems and environments. Prof Paul Bown, Drs Jackie Lees and Stuart Robinson (UCL Earth Sciences) in collaboration with an international research team are studying examples of such exceptional rocks. This exhibition shows some of the extraordinary architecture, beauty and diversity of the microfossils on which these studies are based.
